THE IDEA OF LICHT FELD

Inspired by the premises of the former Sulzer-Burckhardt area on the Gundeldinger Feld, and by the legendary Hammer exhibitions, the idea came to me to take advantage of the possibilities of the experimental phase in which the Gundeldinger Feld finds itself, in order to realize a sustained and recurring experiment: It is the proposal - unlike in the commercial art field - to exhibit the oeuvre of a group of artists year after year, giving an insight into the development of individual artists. It is thus not, first and foremost, intended to be a more-or-less randomly selected snapshot, but rather a location for continuity. This seems to us to make sense, because concentration and continuity represent a clear contrast to the rapid turnover, arbitrariness and superficial nature of the commercial art field. The public has the opportunity to become more intensively involved with individual artists. The artists, on the other hand, have a protected "laboratory" at their disposal, offering them the possibility of setting milestones for their individual artistic development through an exhibition. It should be explicitly stated that the goal is not to "purchase" a certain status by showcasing international artists, but rather to develop individual artists, and thus to concentrate on the substance - the artistic potential of the exhibits.

LICHT FELD exhibitions should be held at least once a year, in environments similar to Exhibition Hall 7 on Gundeldinger Feld, in Basle and abroad. The core group of members will suggest and select further artists for future exhibitions. Exhibition topics or other frameworks are not proposed to the artists. Independence is the essential focus. Each artist should respond with his or her personality, craft, style and creativity to the possible repetition of the physical premises or to new environments, and contribute appropriate work. Any form of co-operation within the group and/or with new artists, with regard to the creation of new work, is positively sought.

LICHT FELD PHILOSOPHIE

Inspiriert durch die Räumlichkeiten des ehemaligen Sulzer-Burckhardt-Areals auf dem Gundeldinger Feld und durch die legendären Hammerausstellungen, ist bei mir die Idee entstanden, die Möglichkeiten der Experimentalphase, in der sich das Gundeldinger Feld befindet, zu nutzen, um ein dauerhaftes und wiederkehrendes Experiment zu realisieren: Es ist das Vorhaben, mit einer Gruppe von Künstlern eine Werk-Schau zu realisieren, die anders als im kommerziellen Kunstbetrieb - Jahr für Jahr einen profunden Einblick in die Entwicklung einzelner Künstler gibt. Es ist also nicht in erster Linie an eine mehr oder weniger zufällige Momentaufnahme gedacht, sondern an einen Ort der Kontinuität. Dies scheint uns deshalb lohnenswert, weil Konzentration und Kontinuität einen deutlichen Kontrast zur Schnellebigkeit, Beliebigkeit und Oberflächlichkeit des kommerziellen Kunst-betriebs darstellen. Das Publikum hat die Möglichkeit, sich eingehender auf einzelne Künstler einzulassen. Den Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wiederum steht ein geschütztes "Laboratorium" zur Verfügung, das ihnen die Möglichkeit bietet, an einer Ausstellung Wegmarken ihrer eigenen künstlerischen Entwicklung zu setzen. Diese hat ausdrücklich nicht zum Ziel, sich ein Niveau durch Präsentation internationaler Künstler zu "erkaufen", sondern sie soll die Entwicklung einzelner Künstlerinnen und Künstlern sein und sich damit auf das Wesentliche, nämlich das künstlerische Potential der gezeigten Exponate, konzentrieren.

LICHT FELD-Ausstellungen sollen mindestens 1x im Jahr, in ähnlichem Umfeld wie die Halle 7 auf dem Gundeldinger Feld, in Basel und im Ausland durchgeführt werden. Die Kerngruppe wird weitere KünstlerInnen für die kommenden Ausstellungen vorschlagen und auswählen. Ausstellungsthemen oder andere Vorgaben werden den KünstlerInnen nicht gemacht. Die Unabhängigkeit steht im Zentrum. Jeder, jede KünstlerIn soll mit seiner Persönlichkeit, Handwerk, Stil und Kreativität auf die eventuell wiederkehrenden Räumlich-keiten oder neue Umgebungen eingehen und entsprechende Arbeiten beisteuern. Jedwede Kooperation innerhalb der Gruppe und oder mit neuen KünstlerInnen, wenn es darum geht, neue Arbeiten zu kreieren, ist gewünscht.
